Supporting Children and Adolescents During COVID-19 – CDC and National Center for Child Traumatic Stress

Children and adolescents may worry about themselves, their families, and their friends getting ill with COVID-19. Parents, family members, school staff, and other trusted adults can play an important role in helping children and adolescents make sense of what they hear in a way that is honest, accurate, and minimizes anxiety or fear. The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) joined the CDC EPIC Team on Wednesday, July 22. Dr. Melissa Brymer, Director of the Terrorism and Disaster Program UCLA/Duke University National Center for Child Traumatic Stress discussed possible ways to support young people during COVID-19. She also described NCTSN’s available resources and outline how to have conversations with children and adolescents about what is happening.

In October 2017, the Ypsilanti District Library launched TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten, an early literacy text messaging service, with LSTA grant funding. With the support of community partners, the successful project reached over 1,000 families across Washtenaw County via text, offering activities parents could do with children 5 and under to prepare them for school and beyond. Find out more about this pilot project that may become available to libraries statewide in 2021. This webinar will be recorded and shared with registrants. It is brought to you by the Library of Michigan and supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The survey covers three age groups, Children’s (0-11), Teens (12-18), and Adults (19+) [age categories as defined by the Institute of Museum and Library Services].

CSLP works with libraries to create an inclusive literacy based program that is enjoyable for all ages, provide a reproducible program with a unified theme, share resources and offer professional support. Your response to this survey ensures that we continue to receive a valuable product from CSLP. In addition, survey responses help state library staff support your library’s needs. This program is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

This list was a collaborative effort between the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). Titles on this list were compiled by members of BCALA and members of ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee. ALSC's Board of Directors endorses BCALA's statement condemning increased violence and racism toward Black Americans and people of color and stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, BCALA, and those working to dismantling racial capitalism and white supremacy in all of its forms.
