PLA and Special Olympics are hosting an informal sharing session at 1pm Eastern (10am Pacific) on Thursday, February 25, 2021 to learn more about how public libraries can work with Special Olympics. We are looking for representatives from a dozen or so libraries of various sizes to join us to hear a little more about the Young Athletes program and give feedback on how it might spread to new public library partners.

USBBY
The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) invites everyone to the opening act of the 14th International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) regional conference on Saturday, March 6. The Opening Act event will be dedicated to exploring two amazing books: Ashley Bryan's Infinite Hope in the morning session (10:30 am - 12:00 pm EST), and Ruta Sepetys' The Fountains of Silence in the afternoon session (2:30 - 4:00 pm EST).
There is a modest registration fee of $15 ($10 for USBBY members), which will go to support USBBY's twinning partners, the IBBY national sections in Haiti, Lebanon, El Salvador, and Palestine.

Field Guide

The Guide sets out a set of essential tasks that library staff should focus on in order to be successful during times of crisis and these include community engagement and asset mapping and re-thinking library structures.

Do the Write Thing Challenge
The annual Do the Write Thing Challenge is an national essay program that gives middle school students an opportunity to examine the impact of violence on their lives. Through this program, students are invited to communicate in written form what they think should be done to reduce youth violence. Students are also encouraged to make personal commitments to do something about the problem. Two national ambassadors from Michigan will be invited by the National Campaign to Stop Violence to attend the “Do the Write Thing Challenge” recognition week in Washington, D.C. The deadline for schools to participate is March 26, 2021. The CLEL Bell Picture Book Awards are an annual recognition of five high-quality picture books that provide excellent support of early literacy development in young children, highlighting the Every Child Ready to Read activities (read, sing, talk, play, write) that prepare young children to be ready to learn to read when they reach kindergarten. The Selection Committee selects five winners annually from titles suggested by CLEL members and other early literacy advocates, including librarians, teachers, parents, and publishers.
