The past year has presented teens and the libraries that serve them with numerous challenges that will continue to affect them in 2021 and beyond. What does the future hold for today's teens? Where do we as librarians go from here? What's next for our libraries? Join YALSA, librarians, and YA authors as we discuss strategies for serving teens during difficult times and continue to develop programs that ensure our biggest little safe spaces thrive for years to come.

  * How do staff provide inclusive programming and diverse collections? How do we ensure representation and equity of access to materials and information? e.g. book and program challenges, the library as a "neutral" space. How can literature assist us?
  * How does staff provide outreach to teens in their community? How do you meet teens where they are?
  * How do we create more inclusive and "safe(r)" spaces? How do we empower teens to find their voice and speak out about issues important to them? e.g. gun violence, global warming, #metoo, institutional racism, LGBTQ rights.
  * How are staff affected by adversity on the job? How do we address this and other experiences like compassion, fatigue, and burnout? e.g. self-care

MDE Early Literacy Updates in Michigan
Educators and families are worried about the potential for many students to be identified for retention<https://www.wilx.com/2021/02/18/fear-of-mass-flunking-looms-overs-state-reading-law/> under the Read by Grade Three Law this year. The Governor's Educator Advisor Council has made recommendations in light of COVID-19, including replacing retention letters with IRIPs and "Read at Home" plans, allowing districts to use multiple literacy assessments as opposed to just the M-STEP, and extending literacy support beyond K-3.

A new report from the Detroit Education Research Partnership<https://education.wayne.edu/detroit_ed_research/derp_third_grade_reading_and_attendance_final.pdf> connects chronic absenteeism with the probability of being identified for retention under the Read by Grade Three Law, finding that each year of being chronically absent in K-3 is associated with a 26% increase in the probability of being eligible for retention. They make policy recommendations for reducing chronic absenteeism particularly in kindergarten, as being chronically absent in kindergarten is predictive of future chronic absenteeism and the negative effects of chronic absenteeism is additive over multiple years. Such policies may include required kindergarten enrollment and/or expanding state-funded pre-K.
