As award winning YA books are challenged, the Black Lives Matter movement focuses public attention on the realities of racism, Drag Queen Story Hour raises headlines and eyebrows, and extreme groups have gained access to mainstream forums, librarians may face many diverse conflicts in public service. Through case analysis, readings, and discussion, this course will address how librarians can explore and rely on professional ethics to address and resolve conflicts. This course is designed as an introduction to the principles of moral reasoning in application with special consideration of the tensions that may arise in professional ethics for librarians.

STEAM brought art into the mix. STREAM takes all areas including reading and writing and stresses the importance of cross curriculum education. All correlations should be natural and we will work on the kits that can be adapted to be used with multi-age groups and in current library environments.

"As a body, ALA has proven nimble and unflappable in the face of adversity and we will continue to prioritize safety, even as we strive to innovate the digital conference experience to widen attendance and deepen engagement well after this period. Based on the incredible response that Virtual Midwinter 2021 received, we look forward to a dynamic Annual Conference program guaranteed to illuminate, inform and inspire."

Working in three (urban, suburban, and rural) locations, PLA and NCFL will identify culturally-responsive practices and resources that fully and authentically engage historically marginalized Latinx communities in library programs.
As part of the project PLA and NCFL are collecting literature, program examples, and input from public libraries nationwide. To that end, we are asking PLA members to complete a survey to inform the project. Please complete the survey linked below no later than February 9, 2021. Feel free to forward to colleagues in your library who may not have received it directly. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.

We know that there is a strong literacy connection between speaking, reading and writing. Every storytime should include pre-writing or writing activities to support language and literacy skills in our young patrons but, it is often the hardest element to include. Storytelling and Literacy Coach, Jenifer Strauss will share a process for providing engaging writing activities in your storytime plans to enrich your programs and provide parents with ways to extend the language experience when they get home.

These programs are made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan.

Have a good weekend,
