CSLP Updates
Additional materials available for #TailsandTales! New reading records are available to download and print (they are in both English and Spanish). Just look in the "Online Only" folder when you log into the manual on cslpreads.org, as more and more resources are pooled, CSLP will continue to update the "online only" resource folder.
CSLP is seeking slogan input for the Adventure theme in 2024, and theme suggestions for 2025!
Please read the details & submit your suggestions to me: https://forms.gle/PprHHuD4oW5j6K5HA. Due: end of day, April 9th.
The Teen Video Challenge, sponsored by the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), is an annual national video contest open to all teens (librarian and teacher support is encouraged). The challenge is for teens to create a public service announcement-type video that shows their unique interpretation of the 2021 CSLP slogan "Tails and Tales." Videos are to be no longer than 60 seconds and should promote libraries and reading. https://www.cslpreads.org/programs/teen-program/2021-teen-video-challenge/<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpreads.org%2Fprograms%2Fteen-program%2F2021-teen-video-challenge%2F&data=04%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C6fda792fc4bf4389e41b08d8e59b3456%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C1%7C637511802058371217%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=n543Z2j%2Bu2fwZ4VTThKbRpGaNSvcJk6U0nlGlOv5OJc%3D&reserved=0>
Videos will be accepted June 1 through August 6, 2021.
* The contest is open to teens 13-18 (though it's fine for people older or younger to appear in the videos).
* The process is simple; teens just need to upload their video to the social media outlet of their choice, submit a link to their video, and complete a simple online form.
* Videos will be limited to 60 seconds, making this a doable project for individuals or small teams.
* Teens/teen teams may submit more than one video.
* The program will accept submissions June 1-Aug 6, 2021, so that it can be incorporated into your summer program (it's still a great opportunity to partner with schools with video production classes or clubs; students can produce the videos as a class project and submit them in June!)
* Permission and model release forms will only be required from the winning entries (completing the forms is a requirement to receive prizes and acknowledgement).
* There will be 5 national winners, who will each receive a cash prize of $200. The TVC Ad-Hoc Committee will convene a judging panel from CSLP partners and members in August.

InBrief: The Science of Resilience<https://developingchild.harvard.edu/resources/inbrief-the-science-of-resilience/> from the Center on the Developing Child, Harvard University
Reducing the effects of significant adversity<https://developingchild.harvard.edu/science/key-concepts/toxic-stress/> on young children's healthy development is critical to the progress and prosperity of any society. Yet not all children experience lasting harm as a result of adverse early experiences. Some may demonstrate "resilience<https://developingchild.harvard.edu/science/key-concepts/resilience/>," or an adaptive response to serious hardship. A better understanding of why some children do well despite early adversity is important because it can help us design policies and programs that help more children reach their full potential.

2021 TALK STORY GRANT AVAILABLE
Applications being accepted for American Indian, Asian and Pacific Islander programs
Are you interested in introducing a program that celebrates American Indian, Asian American and/or Pacific Islander American cultures in your library or community organization? The American Indian Library Association (AILA) and the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) are now accepting applications for the 'Talk Story: Sharing Stories, Sharing Culture' grant.
Talk Story<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftalkstorytogether.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7CLancasterC5%40michigan.gov%7C8bdd0e6e61ec48f05bbb08d8e8d12f8e%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637515332440931272%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=u44ab%2FKvBvgF5oib6eYupWCedkDEAFVT7XkOkm6PGkA%3D&reserved=0> is a family literacy program that caters to American Indian, Asian, and Pacific Islander families, celebrating their stories through books, storytelling, and art. Once again, AILA and APALA have partnered on this grant program to allocate funding to libraries and community organizations to help them implement Talk Story programs. The 2021 Talk Story Grant is funded through the generous support of Toyota California Community Foundation. Two grant winners for each organization will receive $750 to fund a program that meets the criteria of the grant. Planned programs can be in person or virtual.
"Cultural sharing is a valued custom in Asian, Pacific Islander, and American Indian cultures," said Amy Breslin, Co-Chair of the Talk Story grant. "This grant allows the opportunity for celebrating our history and traditions and building partnerships in our communities."
Past grant winners have included language programs, early childhood literacy, youth identity development, and a variety of arts programming including dance, music, and writing. "There is a lot of room for creativity in this grant," said Angela Thornton, Co-Chair of the Talk Story program. "We want people to explore partnerships in their communities and see what they can create."
Applications are due by April 1, 2021. Eligibility details and past winners can be found at www.talkstorytogether.org/grants<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.talkstorytogether.org%2Fgrants&data=04%7C01%7CLancasterC5%40michigan.gov%7C8bdd0e6e61ec48f05bbb08d8e8d12f8e%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637515332440941225%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=YoSvT9v8DAoxB9p3JAqkfxAcxbPYcL1Qb2t6FnaGiXU%3D&reserved=0>.
