The CLEL (Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy) Conference subcommittee is excited to announce we are now accepting conference proposals for the virtual 2021 CLELCON - "The Little Engine that Could....Moving over the Mountain," held October 7-8. Please be sure to have your presentation proposal submitted by midnight MT on June 4 for
consideration. We are also excited to continue the CLEL Leadership Academy for the first day of the conference, October 7, which will focus on empowering participants to lead from where they are, regardless of position or experience. Our main conference will be October 8 and will focus more on early literacy, learning and storytime resources. We are searching for presenters for both days --please submit your proposal here: https://forms.gle/KoRnojuxtiQwfq1EA<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FKoRnojuxtiQwfq1EA&data=04%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7Cf02d8549b30b418a6d3208d915574fe3%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C1%7C637564287020593301%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=RQ7UfI0%2Fyd1%2Fdli92%2B35a%2FGYKmK%2BxCRazcY2n1dMeKg%3D&reserved=0>.
Based on last year's feedback, we are adding some more informal opportunities for members to network and connect with each other. We would love for folks to share resources and experiences with each other about the topics that excite and inspire them, and are also searching for some facilitation support. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate more in CLEL without the pressure of a full conference presentation. If you have interest, please let us know here: https://forms.gle/BJ9onFEVxdbQ4au69<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FBJ9onFEVxdbQ4au69&data=04%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7Cf02d8549b30b418a6d3208d915574fe3%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C1%7C637564287020603261%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=k%2Fg8RgZu1RJ5X7wtae8mMlKjxddig4%2FcsZR65Sr0fLE%3D&reserved=0>

Learning Together: Increasing staff and family commitment to early literacy at Phoenix Public Library<https://info.lena.org/phoenix-public-library-webinar>
June 16, 1:00 PM ET
As a large, urban public library system, Phoenix Public Library serves communities with high rates of childhood poverty and low rates of third grade reading proficiency. Because early literacy and language acquisition are critical factors in reading success, they have a laser focus on supporting children birth to age five and training caregivers to become the best first teachers.
In 2018, Phoenix Public Library added LENA Start to its early literacy program offerings. While the Early Literacy Outreach Team had always had a heart and mission to reach families with young children, adding LENA Start brought an increased knowledge of child development and new practices on how to best support families. Early literacy librarians have now been better able to communicate with families and have more strategies and tools and feel better equipped to support them.
Join us to hear from Wendy Resnik, Children and Teen Services Coordinator at ‎Phoenix Public Library, about their implementation journey. We’ll talk about funding sources, community partnerships, staff development, how they pivoted to virtual during COVID, and their plans to return to in-person programming.

 OK2SAY Continues to Contribute to Safer Environments for Students<https://www.michigan.gov/ok2say/>
MI State Police, 5.14.21
Nearly all school and law enforcement personnel using the confidential reporting system OK2SAY indicate it is useful and helpful in stopping harm before it occurs. Seventy-three percent report they were unaware of the problem before the tip was submitted.
OK2SAY empowers Michigan students to help prevent violence and make their schools safe by confidentially reporting threatening behavior. Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The program’s 2020 Annual Report<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/ok2say/2020_AnnualReport_MSP_ADA_ver13_724455_7.pdf> shows that OK2SAY received 3,743 tips spanning 31 categories, with the top three types of tips being:

  *   Suicide threats - 896 tips
  *   Drugs – 456 tips
  * Other (e.g., anxiety, stress, depression, harassment) - 436 tips
Other findings from the 2020 annual report include that 10 tips involved the confiscation of weapons and 42 tips involved the seizure of drugs or alcohol. In 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program experienced a 42 percent decrease in tip volume as students transitioned to a virtual learning environment.
OK2SAY is available 24/7 and tips can be submitted the following ways:

•                     Call: 8-555-OK2SAY (855-565-2729)

•                     Text: 652729 (OK2SAY)

"TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten" is an early literacy text messaging service launched by Ypsilanti District Library and partners, with LSTA grant funding. This program will allow libraries across Michigan to text families with activities to do with children 5 and under to prepare them for school and beyond. Libraries will also be able to use the program to promote events and collections to families with young children and get tips for building community partnerships for early literacy. Find out more about this project that will be available for public libraries to implement starting this Fall, with IMLS National Leadership funding.
This webinar will be recorded and shared with registrants. It is brought to you by the Library of Michigan and Ypsilanti District Library, with support in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The Zoom link will be emailed to registered attendees the day before the webinar.

PCI Webinars
Wednesday, May 26, 2021
2:00 – 3:30 PM ET
This interactive and informative 90-minute webinar will introduce emerging practices, fundamental methods, and knowledge to empower library staff to:

  * incorporate children, youth, and family programming during the COVID-19 pandemic challenge,
  * design, implement, and assess programs, including the use of take-home kits,
  * reinvent their role with customers,
  * strengthen collaborations among peers and community partners,
  * help make the library a magnet drawing people into a realm to elevate an individual’s capacity for learning, discovering excellence, and contributing to life no matter the challenge.
An emphasis will be placed on virtual programming, however, examples of all program types – virtual, outdoor, in-person, and hybrid (in-person and virtual) – will be used for all sizes of libraries, budgets, and ambition.
This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan.

Hope you enjoy some sunshine this weekend!
