The $242,351 grant will further develop and expand capacity for the Michigan Digital Preservation Network (MDPN) through a first-of-its-kind digital preservation system. The MDPN, a member-governed, collaborative organization dedicated to preserving Michigan’s digital cultural heritage, has been a program of MCLS since 2020.

The MDPN’s project will build one of the first production-scale digital preservation networks using newly developed software from the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) Program at Stanford University. This new LAAWS (LOCKSS Architected as a Web Service) software, paired with other tools that promote ease-of-use and accessibility, will ultimately make digital preservation easier for small and under-resourced institutions with little to no technical expertise.

Although the study's findings suggest that polyester-based open reel magnetic audiotapes that are playable today and kept at standard room temperature and relative humidity conditions could be playable for up to 100 years, it is not clear as to whether or not equipment to play back and digitize the reels, or skilled technicians able to handle media, will last as long as the tapes themselves.

Equally important is the fact that the Getty Trust has committed $30 million in support for the processing and digitization of the archive — an essential step in the critical work of making this preeminent collection available and searchable to scholars, researchers, journalists, and the general public.
