#HelpLMFind: Michigan State Fair Programs, Posters, Booklets & Premium Lists
Library of Michigan staff regularly seeks Michigan-related items of all description to add the Library's collections. Today we want to highlight our continued search for past Michigan State Fair materials. Programs, posters, booklets, and premium lists are all examples of the kind of published ephemera that helps us preserve the story at this longtime cultural icon of our state.
It is hard to imagine all the lives the Michigan State Fair touched in its 160-year history from 1849 until 2009. Not only did millions of Michigan residents attend the Fairs over the years for amusement and edification, but it also provided showcasing opportunities for exhibitors, homemakers, handcrafters, farmers, 4-Hers, and youth livestock clubs. Even urban gardeners found a venue at the Michigan State Fair to show off their produce and compete for ribbons and cash prizes. The Fair migrated to various towns during its first few decades until it acquired a permanent home in Detroit in 1905 on property at Woodward and Eight Mile Road.
Unfortunately, financial woes strained the State Fair during the decades leading up 2009, when funding from the State of Michigan was cut for future state fairs. In 2013, the Michigan State Fair operation was reimagined as a private undertaking by the Michigan State Fair, LLC, and finds its home at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

New to the Rare Book Collection
The Library of Michigan recently acquired Michigan Supreme Court Justice Isaac Marston's personal copy of Revised Rules of the Supreme Court and Law and Chancery Rules of the Circuit Courts of Michigan and the Superior Courts of Detroit and Grand Rapids (1877) and is now part of the Library's Rare Book collection.
Born in Ireland in 1839, Marston came to Michigan at the age of 17 in 1856 and worked on farms in Southfield. With only a sum of $30 to his name, he entered Law school at the University of Michigan in 1859. Marston supported himself in school by working in the library and through the assistance of Judge Thomas Cooley, who provided him work to pay expenses. He graduated in 1861 and began to practice privately in Alma, later in Ithaca, and finally in Bay City. Marston held several other roles within the legal system, including Justice of the Peace, Prosecuting Attorney and City Attorney. In 1872, he was sent as a representative to the State Legislature for the extra session. In 1874, he was appointed Michigan Attorney General for 9 months and in 1875 was elected to fill a vacancy on the Michigan Supreme Court. Marston served on the Supreme Court until 1883, also holding the role of Chief Justice between 1880-1881. He returned to private law practice and eventually died in 1891.
One of the fascinating aspects of this rare item is that it contains the hand-written notes and published rule updates used by Isaac Marston during his tenure on the Supreme Court of Michigan (1875-1883) and later as he practiced law privately in Bay City.
