Happy Birthday, Library of Michigan!
The beginnings of the Library of Michigan come from the days of the Michigan Territory. In 1828, Michigan's territorial council realized the need to collect, compile and store Michigan territorial laws and other important documents for the territorial government. Henry Schoolcraft (a member of the legislative council at the time) introduced the resolution that became "An Act to provide for the appointment of a Librarian" to take on that responsibility. On June 16, 1828, the resolution was approved by Governor Lewis Cass and the Library of Michigan was officially born.
At the time the resolution was approved, the library's collection consisted of 131 books used by the territorial council at the courthouse in Detroit. The library and collection continued to expand and evolve as Michigan gained statehood in 1837, followed by the move of the state capital from Detroit to Lansing. The present day collection numbers in the millions and is located at the Michigan Library and Historical Center.

Juneteenth
"In 1863, during the American Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free. More than two years would pass, however, before the news reached African Americans living in Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state's residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The former slaves immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting, song, and dance.
The following year, on June 19, the first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas.  Within a few years, African Americans in other states were celebrating the day as well, making it an annual tradition. Celebrations have continued across the United States into the 21st century and typically include prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals with music, food, and dancing." Baby Formula Shortage
In the spring of 2022 news reports started coming out about a nationwide shortage of baby formula linked to factories in Michigan. The news was often surprising to anyone without an infant, but created genuine need and fear for parents who relied on formula.

Pending Library Catalog Changes
The Library of Michigan's catalog software will undergo a complete change on June 30th. During the week prior to the change on the 30th, the Library's patron record system, catalog, and circulation system will be unavailable. However, there will be a manual process in place to record checked-out materials. Here is a timeline of what to expect between now and the June 30 go-live:

  *   June 22, 2022 - Patrons cannot submit library card applications and Library staff must cease processing card applications.

Once the system goes live on June 30, there will still be several projects to refine the software in order to make sure everything is working properly. As that work is taking place, please be aware that some features of the catalog and check-out system may experience glitches.
Furthermore, patrons will eventually need to change their library card pin numbers in order to use our electronic resources remotely.
