Library Engagement Paid Internship - Spring Semester 2023

WMU Libraries is seeking a graduate student actively enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS program to join the Western Michigan University Libraries Engagement team in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This is a paid in-person internship for 150-200 hours over 14 weeks primarily during evening hours. Pay is $20/hour. Under the supervision of the Engagement Librarian, the intern will gain professional experience in an academic library with an emphasis on engagement and outreach, collaborate with library colleagues and campus partners, engage with the campus community, and develop programming that fulfills the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. The internship can be coordinated with a practicum. Final work schedule will accommodate academic commitments. Position is open until filled. Virtual interviews will be scheduled immediately. Anticipated start date is January 9, 2023.

Orientation and Training

University Libraries provides a robust orientation and training program that not only introduces the intern to a specialty area with our large academic library system but also exposes them to the full array of operations in all library departments. Supervisors will make every effort to help the intern make meaningful connections between their library work and their MLIS/MLS/MSI course studies.

Supervisors will actively work with interns to find opportunities to participate in campus or online workshops, webinars, professional development activities, and research projects.

Final Project Portfolio

All interns will be encouraged to document their accomplishments throughout their time with University Libraries, including collecting tangible work products and evidence of meaningful library experience. Supervisors will work with the intern to describe their experience on a CV and in any paperwork required for their MLIS/MLS/MSI program. Our goal is for our interns to be well prepared to move to the next level in their careers.
