SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries with STAR Net - All Ages
These SEAL workshops will prepare and empower public library staff to facilitate meaningful solar and space science programs for their patrons that build curiosity, knowledge and inspiration. Attendees will receive hands-on training on operating solar telescopes and other methods for direct and indirect solar viewing, best practices for developing and facilitating STEM programs, and how to engage with community partners and library-specific digital resource networks. Attendees will also be able to sign up for free solar eclipse glasses to distribute to their communities in advance of both eclipses! STAR Net facilitators, bringing many years of experience building the STEM capacity of public library staff, will work with each state library to customize the workshop experience based on the needs and interests of public libraries within that state.

Two solar eclipses are coming to North America - an Annular Eclipse in 2023 and a Total Solar Eclipse in 2024 - and it's time for public library staff to get ready! Thanks to a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and a supplement to the NASA at My Library Project, the Space Science Institute's STAR Net team is providing 5 million solar viewing glasses, in-person training workshops, solar science circulation kits, print resources,~10,000 public libraries and 55 state library agencies across the nation. TALK: Text to Learn for Kindergarten
In March's newsletter<https://texttolearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/TALK-Newsletter-March-2023.pdf>, read highlights from the Caregiver Perception Survey report, including findings that parents want to hear from you!  The tip of the month includes links to a guide and short video if you need a reminder about how to send texts to your users to promote the library. Find the links to two drop-in Zoom sessions in April if you have questions or need a refresher.

MiLibrary Quest

Your library is invited to participate in the Summer 2023 MiLibraryQuest for teens.  It is SUPER easy for a library to participate and provides a fun activity for your teens. Recent quests have had between 110 and 175 teens from across the state submit entries. Our Quest this summer will be in the format of a digital escape room about Haunted and Mysterious Michigan. Teens will be challenged to "Survive Together" as they face all manner of ghosts and ghouls to solve the mystery of their appearance in our state. Puzzles and riddles will aid them in the quest.

Summer Quest will begin on July 1 and end on August 5 or August 12. The ending date will be updated as soon as it is finalized.

Another resource is their Place Matters: What Surrounds Us Shapes Us infographic: https://developingchild.harvard.edu/resources/place-matters-what-surrounds-us-shapes-us/. A wide range of conditions in the places where children live, grow, play, and learn can get "under the skin" and affect their developing brains and other biological systems. Beginning before birth, these environmental conditions shape how children develop, which shapes their lifelong physical and mental health.
