The Milan Public Library is seeking a summer intern for a ten-week time period from mid-May through August, 2023 (specific start and end dates are flexible). This posting is intended for applicants currently enrolled in, or recent graduates of an ALA accredited graduate program in library/information sciences.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in the provision of public library services to all ages.
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Library Director, Assistant Director and Youth Services Coordinator, the Intern will support public services, including programming and exhibit activities, while learning about various aspects of public library services.
Hours: 10-15 per week, including evenings and weekends for the duration of the internship.
Salary: $14/hour, paid bi-weekly. No benefits are associated with this position.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
* Provide excellent public service, including reader’s advisory and computer assistance to a diverse community at the Info/Reference desk.
* Participate as assigned in the development and delivery of adult and youth programs, including Summer Reading.
* Work with librarians on collection based and other projects as assigned.
* Provide backup assistance to Circulation staff as needed.
* Develop proficiency with Library processes and electronic resources.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
* Work positively and collaboratively to accomplish Library goals.
* Adapt and respond to multiple priorities and resolve problem situations in a positive manner.
* Communicate effectively in writing and verbally as appropriate with patrons and colleagues.
Requirements and Qualifications:
* Currently enrolled in (or recent graduate of) ALA accredited graduate library/information science degree program.
* Punctuality and reliability.
* Dedication to public service.
* Successful public service/customer service experience preferred.
* Enthusiasm for learning and adapting to new ideas and technologies.
* Friendly, self-motivated and creative.
* Working knowledge of common computer applications, including Microsoft Office and the Internet.
* Understanding of, and commitment to, library values and ethics, as articulated in the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics.
* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
Seeing, keyboarding, using technology (computers, scanners, printers, copiers); bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting; carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for periods of time.
