Dewey Decibel podcast investigates haunted library in a special Halloween episode
Why do strange things keep happening at Peoria (Illinois) Public Library? Is the building haunted by ghosts? Do the stacks truly sit on cursed ground?
Dewey Decibel, the monthly podcast of American Libraries magazine, will tackle these questions in its Oct. 26 episode. In “The Haunting of Peoria Public Library”—a Halloween special sponsored by Gale, a Cengage Company—Dewey Decibel host Phil Morehart travels to Central Illinois to unravel a paranormal mystery with help from local witnesses and expert researchers. Award-winning nonfiction author Mary Roach (“Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife”), paranormal writer John B. Kachuba (Ghosthunting Illinois), and staffers at Peoria Public Library and Bradley University Library guest star and guide Dewey Decibel on a ghoulish expedition. The episode goes live Oct. 26 on SoundCloud and iTunes.

United for Libraries to partner on 'Summer Scares' reading program
The Horror Writers Association (HWA) is developing a “Summer Scares” reading program that will provide libraries and schools with an annual list of recommended horror titles for adult, young adult (teen), and middle grade readers. The goal is to introduce new authors and help librarians start conversations with readers that will extend beyond the books from each list and promote reading for years to come.
HWA is partnering with United for Libraries, Book Riot, and Library Journal/School Library Journal on “Summer Scares.” Award-winning author Grady Hendrix and a committee of four librarians will be selecting three recommended fiction titles in each of three reading levels— Middle Grade, Teen, and Adult— for a total of nine “Summer Scares” selections. The goal of the program is to encourage a national conversation about the entire horror genre, across all age levels, at libraries all over the country and ultimately get more adults, teens, and children interested in reading. Official “Summer Scares” designated authors will also be making themselves available to appear, either virtually or in person, at public and school libraries all over the country, for free.

NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

ALA seeks applicants for national Policy Corps
The American Library Association (ALA) invites library advocates to apply online to join the ALA Policy Corps. The deadline for applications is Nov. 16. The Corps initiative aims to strengthen advocacy related to key national library policy areas—ranging from broadband equity and copyright, to federal funding and STEM education, to privacy and cybersecurity.
“Expanding and deepening policy engagement at all levels of government is essential for advancing library priorities more quickly and successfully,” said ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo. “We are stronger together as we establish national policy library advocates across the country.”
The Corps’ goals include developing policy experts available to the library community, ALA and the ALA Washington Office, creating longevity in expertise and engagement in early to mid-career library and information professionals, and positively impacting national public policy in areas key to ALA’s strategic goals. The ALA Washington Office has partnered with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), Public Library Association (PLA) and United for Libraries (UNITED) to develop and support the program.
