Part-Time Youth Services Librarian II (YDL-Whittaker)

The Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) seeks a friendly, customer service-oriented Youth Librarian passionate about literacy, learning and family empowerment to serve youth, families, and teachers in a busy, creative environment.

POSITION:                     YDL - Youth Department Librarian II (.5 FTE, 20 hours per week)
REPORTS TO:                Head of Youth Services

TYPICAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

·       Delivers prompt, courteous reference and reader’s advisory services for all ages.

·       Assists patrons in use of computers and other library technology.

·       Plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates storytimes and educational programs that build literacy and STEAM skills and provide cultural enrichment.

·       Develops, maintains and promotes library collections.

·       Curates content for webpages, brochures, and iPads.

·       Maintains attractive, safe, educational spaces for youth through appropriate displays and exploratory learning stations.

·       Serves on library-wide work groups.

·       Builds partnerships with community organizations to meet the needs of youth and families.

·       Maintains a working knowledge of trends in youth literature and youth services through webinars, meetings, conferences, and professional literature.

·       Contributes to the smooth operation of the Library.

·       Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·       Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.

·       Knowledge of children’s literature, information resources, and early literacy concepts.

·       Knowledge of computers, Internet, social media, and emerging technologies.

·       Ability to design age-appropriate programs based on childhood development principles.

·       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

 *   Strong commitment to customer service.
 *   Flexible and dependable.

·       Ability to function in a professional manner, work independently, and use good judgment.

·       Enthusiastic, positive team player.

·       Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.

·       Strong desire to engage, nurture and mentor children and serve their families and teachers.

·       Demonstrated understanding of philosophies, techniques, and trends in public library service.


HOURS:
Part-time, 20 hours per week (including regularly scheduled evenings and weekends).

SALARY/BENEFITS:
                                  Hourly wage starting at $19.10.  Pro-rated paid time off and paid holidays.  Employer paid retirement contribution after one year of service. This position is part of the AFSCME union bargaining unit.

Community Relations Coordinator

The Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) is seeking a talented Community Relations Coordinator to join its Administrative team.  Under the broad direction of the Library Director, the Community Relations Coordinator is responsible for all YDL communications efforts and oversees implementation of library fundraising activities. This position develops relationships with community partners and works to promote library use and visibility in the Ypsilanti area.

POSITION:                     Community Relations Coordinator, Full-Time (40 hours/week)
REPORTS TO:                Library Director
SUPERVISES:                 Communications Intern

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

·       Plans, writes, edits, reviews design, and coordinates mailing of the 12-page YDL newsletter The Loop 3 times per year

·       Updates, writes, and coordinates content for ypsilibrary.org

·       Designs brochures, flyers, posters and banners to promote library events and services

·       Leads the library’s social media activities

·       Prepares and designs the YDL annual report

·       Monitors YDL brand consistency

·       Writes the library’s annual appeal and coordinates fundraisers with local eateries

·       Participates in writing grant applications and tracks YDL grant activities

·       Cultivates partnerships for joint community projects

·       Updates online calendar of events and digital displays in library facilities

·       Communicates with local media to promote YDL and its activities

·       Serves on Internal Communications committee and coordinates Intranet content

·       Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

 *   Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public relations, graphic arts, journalism, or related field or equivalent experience
 *   Excellent graphic design and computing skills

·        Knowledge of Adobe Suite (Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and MS Publisher, Wordpress, and strong skills using the MS Office Suite including MS Excel mail merge

·        Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills

·       Successful grant writing experience desired

·       Team player who can meet deadlines while delivering high-quality output

·       Familiarity with the Ypsilanti community a plus

·       Excellent public service attitude and work ethic


HOURS:            Full-time, 40 hours per week; schedule may include evening and weekend hours, including Sundays.


SALARY/BENEFITS:      $42,000-$46,000 dependent on qualifications

Comprehensive benefits package including generous paid time off, 12 paid holidays, family coverage for health, vision, and dental insurance, employer contribution to retirement and voluntary 457 plan.
