ALSC now accepting applications for the Baker & Taylor Summer Reading Grant
ALSC and the Programs and Services Recognition Committee are now accepting online applications for the ALSC/Baker & Taylor Summer Reading Grant. This $3,000 grant is designed to encourage reading programs for children in public libraries, while recognizing ALSC members for outstanding program development.
Due to COVID-19, the committee will consider proposals for virtual programming, as well as in-person programs which can take into account public health and safety measures
Each application will be judged on the following:

  *   The plan and outline submitted for a theme-based summer reading program in a public library
  *   Program ideas that are open to all children (birth - 14 years)
  *   The committee encourages innovative proposals involving children with physical or mental disabilities
Applicants must be personal members of ALSC, as well as ALA members, to apply. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 15, 2020. "Choose Your Own Adventure: Read-Aloud Book Club:" https://www.cyoa.com/pages/bookclub
The club is for adventurers of all ages and works best with groups of 5-20 club members at each meeting. The club can run for 9 months or 9 weeks; a total of 9 books will be read throughout the course of the club. The librarian or library staff member will select a Choose Your Own Adventure(r) book to read each session, and the adventurers decide which path the group should take. If the group can't agree, roll a die!

If there is a silver lining to COVID-19 it is the increased awareness and importance of mental health for our teachers, students, and their families/caregivers. The tension created between new social distance protocols and the need to connect and build relationships is heightened, with many not equipped to lower the stress for meaningful teaching and learning to occur in school or in a remote environment. At the same time, school communities and society at large are facing the pandemic of centuries of racism that is harmful to students, particularly Black, Indigenous and students of Color.
What are the strategies that need to be put in place to nurture the growth of each student, their family/caregivers, and teachers during these times? How can we evolve to be culturally responsive in our schools and communities? In this edWebinar, we will:

  *   Learn about key self-care tips not only for students, but adults, too
